Western Scrub Jay

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Scrub-Jay
The Western Scrub-Jay is a large songbird, about 27-31 cm (11.5 in) in length (including its tail), with a 39 cm (15 in) wingspan, and about 80g in weight. Coastal Pacific birds tend to be brighter in coloration than those of the interior, but all are patterned in blue, white and gray, though none as uniform in color as the related Mexican Jay. In general, this species has a blue head, wings, and tail, a gray-brown back, and grayish underparts. The throat is whitish with a blue necklace. The call is described as "harsh and scratchy".

Nests are built low in trees or bushes, 1m to 10m above the ground, primarily by the female while the male guards her efforts. The nests are sturdy, with an outside diameter of 33cm to 58cm, constructed on a platform of twigs with moss and dry grasses lined with fine roots and hair. Four to six eggs are laid from March through July with some regional variations. There are two common shell color variations: pale green background with irregular, olive-colored spots or markings, and pale grayish-white to green background with reddish-brown spots. The female incubates the eggs for about 16 days. The young leave the nest about 18 days after hatching.

New foal for the Pinion Hills herd

New foal for the Pinion Hills herd
A new foal was added to the Pinion Hills "herd" in March. Here he(she?)is with the proud parents.

From Wikipedia:
Foals are born after a gestation period of approximately 11 months. Birth takes place quickly, consistent with the status of a horse as a prey animal, and more often at night than during the day. Foals are born with an ability to quickly escape from predators; normally a foal will stand up and nurse within the first hour after it is born, can trot and canter within hours, and most can gallop by the next day. A newborn foal's legs are almost as long (90%) as those of an adult horse.

Healthy foals grow quickly and can put on up to three pounds or over a kilo a day. A sound diet improves growth and leads to a healthier adult animal, although genetics also plays a part. In the first weeks of life the foal gets everything it needs from the mare's milk. Like a human infant, it receives nourishment and antibodies from the colostrum in milk that is produced within the first few hours or days following parturition. The mare needs additional water to help her produce milk for the foal and may benefit from supplementary nutrition.

A foal may start to eat solids from ten days of age, after eight to ten weeks it will need more nutrition than the mare's milk can supply; supplementary feeding is required by then. It is important when adding solid food to the foal's diet to not overfeed the foal or feed an improperly balanced diet. This can trigger one of several possible growth disorders that can cause lifelong soundness problems. On the other hand, insufficient nutrition to mare or foal can cause stunted growth and other health problems for the foal as it gets older.

Local Radar DOWN

Local Radar DOWN
From the National Weather Service:

Radar Servicing Portions of Western Nevada and Northeast California Down Until Further Notice -UPDATED!!!

The National Weather Service in Reno reports that the KRGX radar that services portions of western Nevada and northeast California, including the Reno-Carson City areas and the Lake Tahoe basin, will be down for a prolonged period due to destruction of the radar dome during strong wind events of December 19th and December 25th, 2008.

Initial damage occurred during strong winds with 140 mph gusts on Friday morning, December 19th. Another storm system with high winds moved through the area Christmas eve into Christmas morning. Peak gusts to 95 mph destroyed the previously damaged radar dome, and damaged the now-unprotected radar dish.

The radar is located in western Nevada at 8299 feet MSL atop Virginia Peak, south of Pyramid Lake. Return to service is unknown at this time. Additional updates will be posted as information becomes available.
